Elks losing streak: Edmonton sets record for longest home losing streak in pro sports

Commonwealth Stadium has not been kind to the Edmonton Elks in recent history.

It's not easy to win on the road in sports, but it's been even harder for Edmonton to win at home. The team has lost 21 consecutive home games, setting the record for the longest losing streak among the major sports leagues in North America.

The Elks have been really bad over the last couple of CFL seasons. After finishing 4-14 in 2022 — tied for the worst record in the league — the squad entered Week 8 of the 2023 campaign winless in seven contests.

This weekend featured a matchup between the Elks and the BC Lions, currently the best team in the CFL. Edmonton dropped the Week 8 contest, 27-0 setting a new record for the longest home losing streak.

Here is a look at where the Elks' losing streak ranks among other sports and in CFL history.

Longest home losing streaks in sports

Coming into the Week 8 matchup with the Lions, the Elks were tied with the MLB's St. Louis Browns for the longest home losing streak in North American sports. St. Louis lost 20 games in a row during the 1953 baseball season.

It's been such a long streak that Edmonton has not won a game at Commonwealth Stadium under its new name. In 2021, the franchise altered the team nickname from the "Eskimos" to the "Elks". The last home win came during the 2019 season when the club was still under its original moniker.

Here is a look at how the Elks' losing streak compares to the other four major professional sporting leagues.

Longest losing streaks in CFL history

Edmonton broke the longest home-losing streak last season. A home loss to the Montreal Alouettes in early October marked the fifth-straight defeat on home turf, surpassing the previous mark of 14 set by Ottawa in between 1987 and 1988.

However, the Elks were able to mix in a few wins on the road during this home-losing streak. As a result, Edmonton only rides an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season, which doesn't even crack the top-five longest losing streaks in CFL history.

The honor goes to Ottawa, who lost 25 games in a row between 1928 and 1932. It's a record that likely will not be broken, as the next-longest streak comes in at 16 games, nine shy of tying the unfortunate record that Ottawa holds.
