Boise Police explain to CBS2 why they issued nearly 40% fewer traffic tickets in 2022

Boise, Idaho (CBS2) – The Boise Police Department is explaining why Officers issued nearly 40% fewer traffic tickets in 2022, compared to 2021.
CBS2 made a public records request asking for the number of traffic citations issued in the years 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
In 2019, Boise Police issued 19,273 traffic tickets.
In 2020, Boise Police issued 19,401 traffic tickets.
In 2021, Boise Police issued 18,279 traffic tickets.
In 2022, Boise Police issued 11,051 traffic tickets.
We reached out to the Boise Police Department about the significant drop in tickets.
A spokeswoman tells us, “We have had to shift resources around inside the police department and that has led to fewer officers being solely focused on writing traffic tickets. To make up for this shift we continue to do targeted enforcement where we can have the most impact on dangerous driving behaviors. While the number of traffic citations is down, the number of traffic crashes is down as well.“
The Boise Police Department reported traffic crashes dropped 7.74% in 2022 compared to 2021.
The intersection of South Cole Road and West Overland Road had 59 crashes, the highest of any location in the city.
